How Do You Cook While on the Road with Your RV?
If there is one thing that never changes, whether you are at home or on the road with your RV, is the fact that you have to eat. You can subsist on take-away meals and canned goods, or you can cook. The question for new RV owners is how to cook while on the road.
If you are not into cooking all that much, you really don’t have to do it You can buy all sorts of canned and frozen foods that only have to be heated up. But for some people, cooking is one of the joys of the RV lifestyle. Being able to do things you cannot do at home makes for a more enjoyable camping experience.
Believe it or not, you have quite a few options for RV cooking:
- Interior oven and stove
- Exterior gas grill
- Exterior camping stove
- Campfire (open flame)
- Dutch oven
- Solar oven.
Just like with our inflatable RV skirting, there are some cooking options that are better than others. The way to determine the best option is to approach it the same way you approach RV skirting: research the choices and try them out.
Cooking Inside Your RV
Motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers all come equipped with interior ovens and stoves. Cooking inside your RV may be the best option when the weather isn’t cooperative. But interior cooking also consumes gas. If you prefer to limit gas consumption, cook outside instead. Cooking outside also helps to keep the heat down in your rig.
Gas Grills and Stoves
Some of your high-end RVs come with gas grills built in. We have seen class A motorhomes with specially built compartments for gas grills. You just open an exterior door, slide the grill out, and start cooking. If your rig isn’t so equipped, you can carry a gas grill with you. Another option is to utilize a camping stove.
Camping stoves almost always run on propane canisters. You can buy the canisters just about anywhere you find camping supplies. The thing about the camping stove is that you do not get the same grilled flavor you get with a gas or charcoal grill. On a camping stove, you are still cooking with pots and pans.
Cooking Over the Fire
For some die-hard campers, cooking over the fire is the only way to go. Needless to say, there are numerous options here. You can cook over the open flame just by placing a steel grate across the fire pit. If you are making something like hot dogs or sausages, you can just pierce them with a stick and hold them over the flame.
Another option is to use a Dutch oven. A typical Dutch oven is a heavy, cast-iron pot or box that you actually place in the coals of the fire. For campers, utilizing a Dutch oven is the camping equivalent of plugging in the crock-pot at home. And yes, the crock-pot option is available too.
Solar Oven
Last but not least is the solar oven. This is typically a small box with some sort of solar collection panel or fabric. With a solar oven, you can cook exclusively with the power of the sun. However, you do have to start your meals early in the day. You will have to continually move the oven so that it stays in the sun.
Just like with RV skirting, there are plenty of options for cooking while on the road with your RV. However you choose to do it, we hope cooking on the road is an enjoyable experience.
